SYNOPSIS
Visualize a modern day version of the two characters from the highly acclaimed film “Pope of Greenwich Village”) on the escape to Florida for owing money to the Mob and wind up unscrupulously stealing a winning lottery ticket.
Here’s the set up
.
Two struggling New Jersey/New Yorkers in the late 20’s, Lester Morrelli and Victor Stanochee run a legitimate small advertising company.
While Lester is working late alone in the office one night, Gus Esposito’s two thugs enter the office looking of Vic. Lester claims he doesn’t know where Vic is, so the two thugs give Lester the message – a good beating that leaves Lester with a few cracked ribs, a bruised faced and a slight head concussion.
Vic, being a bit of a low-life scammer, witnesses the action through the window from the dimly lit sidewalk. After the two thugs leave the office, Vic quickly scampers inside to provide aide to his badly hurt partner.
Down on cash and left with little options, Vic convinces Lester to leave town and catch the first bus trip to Florida — and here is where the dark comedy / drama kicks in.
While in Florida, Vic has to constantly provide first aide to his “hurting buddy” and does so for a guilt cover up for letting him take that beating.
Vic enters a convenient store to get some over-the-counter pain pills Lester. A little Old Lady is at the counter buying her weekly purchase of Lottery Tickets. As the Old Lady exits the store, she drops her lottery stub on the ground, gets in her old car and starts to drive away.
Lester sees the lottery stub on the ground and tries to hobble to the Old Lady to give it back to her – but it’s too late – she is driving away and Lester is too injured to purse the car.
Lester, being a numbers guy, looks over the lottery stub and shoves it in his pocket.
Later that night at the bar, Vic is playing pool while Lester is pounding down a few drinks sitting alone on a bar stool. On the TV screen pops up the weekly Lottery drawing and catches Lester’s attention.
Lester searches his pockets and pulls out the Old Lady’s lottery stub, scans down the row of numbers and becomes STUNNED … calling out to Vic.
Vic is not impressed at all of what Lester is trying to say … “hey, nut job it’s only lottery stub,- it worthless.”
That’s unless they track down the Old Lady and try to steal her WINNING TICKET.
Later that rainy night, they do manage to find the Old Lady house. However, she’s dead in bed from a heart attack from a previous burglary. They surprisingly find the winning ticket and get away “scott free” not knowing a puzzled Detective Lemons will soon be on the case.
Detective Lemons smells a rat somewhere and starts putting the pieces together. Meanwhile, at the same time, Gus sends his ” #1 thug – Lucas” – to Florida to find Victor and wants him dead. Needless to say, Vic and Lester live a hilarious party life equally that of the “rich and not so famous” and not knowing two polar opposite forces are tracking them down.
